US State Department Report Criticizes The Romanian Government, Police And Judges

The US State Department report criticizes the government, police and judges in Romania on human trafficking. The document records considerable efforts from these authorities, which however often proved inefficient or incomplete. According to the report, Romania gave contradictory signals about its efforts to enforce laws against human trafficking and punishments in the field are rather stern, comparable with those for rape. Some observers noted that many judges still have a poor understanding of the phenomenon, which delayed trials, some of them even begun in 2005.
