Romanian President Traian Basescu designates PSD’s Chairman Ponta as prime minister

On Friday, chairman of the opposition Social Democratic Party (PSD) Victor Ponta, also co-chair of the opposition Social Liberal Union (USL) of PSD, the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Conservative Party (PC), was designated Romania’s prime minister by Romanian President Traian Basescu. “Today, I had consultations with the parliamentary parties in order to designate a new prime minister. I can brief you on what each party stands for so that you may understand what we may expect. The national minorities said they will stay consistent with their usual approach of supporting any prime minister-designate. The Democratic Liberal Party (PDL, major at rule) did not have an option either. The PSD was the only party to have a proposal for the office, which was supported by both the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Conservative Party (PC). Consequently, there is only one name that was proposed, Victor Ponta. I signed the designation decree and entrusted him with forming a new Cabinet,” Basescu told a news briefing at Cotroceni after consultations with the parliamentary parties. He also argued that, in his opinion, nothing dramatic to Romania happened as a result of the no-confidence vote cast by Parliament on Friday.
