Romania Vows To Purge Corruption

A team of experts led by the Interior Minister, Traian Igas, is to evaluate the performance of each and every ministerial employee, from the top down, in an attempt to combat corruption in the ministry’s ranks. The decision follows the arrest of around 150 police and border guards working on the Romanian borders with Moldova, Ukraine and Serbia, suspected of graft and of aiding cigarette-smugglers. The Romanian President, Traian Basescu, on Tuesday accused the ministry of being rife with corruption and of having links to organized crime. Analysts agree that the Interior Ministry needs to see radical change if Romania is to prove that it is successfully imposing the rule of law.
