Nokia To Lay Off Approximately 120 People And Close The Cluj R&D Center

Yesterday, electronics giant Nokia announced that by the end of 2012 it will lay off 4,000 employees. The most significant layoffs will be operated in Denmark, Finland and the United Kingdom. The measure is part of a wider plan meant to curb operational spending by up to EUR 1 bln until 2013. In Romania, the measure will affect the Research and Development Center located within the Olympia Business Center of Cluj. Some 120 people are expected to lose their jobs here. The employees that might be laid off from the Center will stay with the company until the end of 2011. Nokia plans to enforce the redundancy plan in several phases, by the end of 2012, at global scale, in line with the development of its product and service portfolio. “As part of lining up with the Nokia strategy, it is estimated that the announcement regarding the reducing of the labor force will have impact over the Research and Development site located in the Olympia Business Center in Cluj. Nokia estimates that until the end of the third trimester this year, current projects taking place in this location will be completely diminished. The Research and Development operations will continue on other centers around the world. It is believed that there will be affected approximately 120 people. There are no changes planned for the Nokia plant in Jucu,” Nokia officials have announced.
