Government to restore public wages in next 6 months – Victor Ponta

Prime Minister Victor Ponta said in an interview on TV that if a totally unforeseen economic phenomenon does not appear in the upcoming 6 months, the Government will restore the public wages to their pre-cut levels in December 2012. The PM stressed that the Cabinet has the necessary funds in the budget for the recoup and also enough space of budgetary deficit, as it has been negotiated with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and for this reason it will hike the public salaries if ‘a totally unforeseen economic and financial phenomenon does not appear.’ Ponta said that an unexpected situation would regard a ‘catastrophe’ related to the developments from Greece, Spain or Portugal in the euro zone. The Cabinet announced two weeks ago that it will hike the public wages in two steps, namely by 8 % as of June and by about 7 % as of December in order to restore the salaries to their levels of before a 25-% cut in 2010.
