Gas and energy bills to grow for 90 % of population in 2013

Some 7 to 7.2 million household consumers representing 83 to 86 % of total consumers could pay higher prices for energy and natural gas after next year’s price liberalization. Only 14 to17 % would receive state aid. However the aid will be gradually eliminated. The prices paid by household consumers are currently regulated by the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) out of social protection considerations. The European Commission (EC) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have asked the government to liberalize prices in order to bring them up to EU levels. Thus, all regulated prices for electricity paid by household consumers will be eliminated in 2013-2017.
