Drought affected about 40% of Romania’s arable surface

According to a document of the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry (MADR), drought has affected over 3.7 million hectares of land (about 40% of arable surface) and in what regards wheat, 30% of last year’s crops have been affected by lack of water. “After the evaluation of areas affected by the draught, the estimative situation is as follows: the total surface affected by drought is of over 3.7 million hectares. Of the total wheat crops planted in the fall of 2011, about 30.5% were affected by drought,” the source said. According to MADR, small sized farms owned by natural persons were affected the most.
