Constitutional Court: President is to represent Romania at European Council meetings

According to a release from the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR), there is a legal conflict of a constitutional nature between the Government, on the one hand, and the President of Romania, on the other hand, generated by the Government and the Prime Minister’s move to exclude the President of Romania from the delegation that participates in the June 28 – 29 European Council meeting. The release reads that “In the exercise of his constitutional responsibilities, the President of Romania participates in European Council meetings, in his capacity as head of state. The President can expressly delegate this responsibility to the Prime Minister”.  According to the document, the arguments for this decision are presented in the body thereof, which will be published in the Official Gazette of Romania, Part I. The decision, taken by majority vote, is final and binding on all parties and is notified to the President of Romania and the Government.
